Duties

Help

As Director, Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, you will:

- Be responsible for planning, directing, and administering all programs and activities of the library and museum.

- Plan and direct the archival program of the library, which contains the papers of Harry Truman including the Presidential materials for the period of his tenure and his Vice Presidential materials; the papers of persons such as cabinet officers, heads of Federal agencies, members of Congress, and political leaders; audiovisual materials for the period of his tenure; and artifact collections of museum objects and memorabilia related to the President and his times.

- Direct the development and implementation of exhibitions and public and educational programs relevant to the mission of the library, which are designed to increase knowledge of and connection to history, increase civic engagement, and establish historical context for current issues.

- Maintain close working relationships with the former President's family and the Truman Library Institute, particularly in developing and sustaining partnership ventures and programs that enhance the growth and reputation of the library as a dynamic museum and center of public scholarship and service.

- Develop cooperative working relationships with academic, cultural and non-profit organizations to establish joint initiatives related to the holdings of the library.

- Provide leadership, policy development, program accountability, budget formulation, and strategic planning for the library, in context with NARA's overall strategic plan, annual budget and operating plans.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • Must complete a 1-year SL probationary period, unless previously completed.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.

To meet minimum qualifications, applicants must possess the following technical competencies. These competencies would typically be gained through experience, education, and training that reflects progressive development and achievement in managing a Federal legal program for a nationwide organization. An individual's total experience and education must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

  • TQ 2: Describe your experience directing a historical, archival, cultural, museum, or educational institution.
  • TQ 3: Describe your experience in providing leadership, policy development, program accountability, budget formulation, and strategic planning for an organization.
